Zinfandel/Primitivo Zinfandel (known as Primitivo in the south of Italy) is an extremely good grape variety, yet until recently it was hardly grown outside California. Now it is creeping out - to Western Australia, Chile and elsewhere. In California, 'Zin' is the most planted black grape. Much of it is turned into bland, very slightly sweet, slightly pink 'white Zinfandel' or cheap, red jug wine for local consumption. But the best grapes from the best and oldest vineyards go to make more substantial reds, mainly designed to drink within two to six years. Good red Zinfandels vary enormously in style, from serious, powerful, oak aged and richly fruity ones, to a light, juicy fruity Beaujolais style. The flavour is reminiscent of blackberries, very fruity and black peppery, with a firm tang of acidity.
